"A fast paced, action packed tale of duty, family,...and zombies" Dr. E.P. Lewis

TOP 10 rated Post Apocalyptic Book

Infected The Fall eBook Caleb Cleek

I really got into "Infected - The Fall" and enjoyed reading this fast paced story. There were times when I sat on the edge of my seat and holding my breath until the outcome was clear. It always appeared that Conner was not around when bad things were about to happen to his wife and son...in fact, I think it happened three times before their home was destroyed by fire.

The storyline is much different from the usual zombie apocalypse books in that after victims are attacked and eaten - they do not rise from the dead as zombies. This group of undead can plan and execute as a group, run in access of 60 miles per hour, but are unable to twist a knob to open a door. The possibility of immunity to the disease doesn't automatically result in a bullet to the head of every victim resulting in a short reprieve. It still isn't clear to me how this virus is transmitted or if the U.S. retaliated against China for releasing the agent.

Unfortunately, I did not read the reviews prior to purchasing this story and was unaware that it was going to be part of a series, so when it suddenly ended with a fistful of cliffhangers, I was quite disappointed. The next installment isn't available yet, so in time, I may never find out how the story ends. Hope it's soon and that I'll still remember this story when it is finally available.

I did find this author to be wordy in spots - telling more than what was needed with unnecessary filler to the story. I also found typos and missing words throughout. I'd recommend this book to anyone willing to read it with an open mind...and just enjoy the ride. Mr. Cleek, it would be worth it to invest in an editor to give your story a once over and smooth out the rough spots. Nevertheless, I applaud you for writing and publishing a book. I know it it takes a lot of time, sacrifice and family support to be an author. Looking forward to the next installment and wishing you success.

Infected The Fall eBook Caleb Cleek Reviews

I have read action adventure / zombie books for many years and Infected The Fall was one of the better books that I have read. Caleb creates characters that are believable, not super human nor ridiculously flawed.

The book flows reasonably well and doesn’t suffer from unrealistic action scenes or slow unnecessary plot sections twists and the level of description and detail is good overall but is very good with respect to the firearms used and handled.

Throughout the book, magazines are magazines not “clips” except when referred to by characters that wouldn’t really know any better. No character drops the safety on a “Glock”, magazines get changed, and empties are dropped or put back in a magazine pouch, characters actually pick up dropped empties or discarded firearms and try their best to count rounds.

I did notice a few correctly spelled incorrect words but they were not frequent enough to really impact the overall story or quality of the book. My only real complaint is that the book was shorter than I expected, it was not a short story but not really a full length paperback book.

All in all a good read, I enjoyed it enough to buy the next book in the series.
I love my zombie stories and each one brings something a little different to the table. This one is no different in that respect. As a note to the author, I found many paragraphs that were absolutely poetic in their prose. Most of the time it was simply a joy to read.

That said, I do have two complaints. First, the entire story of the virus itself is placed early on and takes all the fun guesswork away..
Second, while the ability to turn a beautiful phrase is immensely appreciated, it too often turns mundane tasks worth a line or two into verbose, clunky mountains of unnecessary words. Caleb can spend an entire large paragraph just describing the thirty seconds between reaching a car door and actually pulling out. I've been known to do the same thing, so I know it's not easy to curb your enthusiasm to tell every last detail, and Caleb really does incredible detail work. It's just sometimes too much.

The characters are real and believable in every way, and the whole book seems to be a natural work of art. But next time remember; sometimes less is more. ;)
Too much that I didn't like and too much that I did, but overall, I rated it a winner.
The story was typical post-apocalyptic and I did like that it began with the genesis of the 'zombies.' I liked that the people were in small town America and not in a large metropolitan area. The heroes were noble and it appeared to me that at times they were insufferably so. But, I've seen the finest men and women lose a great deal of moral perspective in warfare and I'm sure they'd do it in a Zombocalypse. These guys remained a little too pristine.

Connor, the protagonist of the story and a deputy, was a Rick Grimes sort. Dedicated to his job, community and family. I admired him and his partner, Matt, a great deal. They displayed a lot of bravery and fought courageously against their foes, undead and human. What drove me to distraction about Connor was his tendency to describe everything in excruciating detail. He took down a guy. He put his feet apart in a certain stance just such a distance apart and pulled his arm back at a certain degree and brought it around at an arc that maximized the force of his trapezius muscles and struck the suspect with his enclosed fist just below his..argh! Just say you punched him into next Tuesday! He has a tendency to ramble about the exact minutiae of many inconsequential acts.

Nonetheless, all things considered, the book has a good premise of a manufactured plague spread in a small backwoods town and that soon becomes nation-wide. Not many things new under the sun where zombie novels are concerned, but the characters and their individual struggles, tragedies and triumphs are what makes each novel unique. I look forward to the second book in the series.
