To escape the failure of a marriage his wife no longer wants and a business that no longer stirs his soul, Jamie Richards runs away to a Caribbean island, where he becomes the salt-crusted, barefoot skipper of the excursion catamaran The Do Over. Along the way, he candidly questions many of the cultural and sexual truisms of his past life, finding that many are no more than myths. JR Ingrisano’s Captain Jolly’s Do Over is a character-driven novel of redemption and relationships, with echoes of Hunter S. Thompson’s The Rum Diary and the stories of William Faulkner’s Yoknapatawpha County. It is the ultimate escape fantasy, a novel of myths wrapped in hard-core truths about modern relationships. Long after you are done, the characters will stay with you, and you’ll find yourself missing them. I especially liked, in an odd way, Patti the Beast. – Jo Roderick, author of The Aeonosphere. Congratulations on an artistic success that deserves to be followed by the commercial kind. --Eric Anderson

I purchased the book because the title caught my curiosity but I was surprised that reading the book gave me a sense of “Déjà vu” . A fiction story of a man who had it all and then lost it. It told of his feelings and the events in his recovery into a new and different lifestyle and the many interesting similar folks he met and interfaced with in his new life.
A man works hard building a business to support his wife and family, works hard to succeed but then loses the most important thing he had, his wife’s love. “Déjà vu”. It parallels the life of so many men that if you are a mid-life man surely you either have lived this, or know someone who has. As I read his story I felt I was one of the characters in it, who was just to the side and out of sight, but there and involved. I couldn’t put it down, in fact I read it twice. When I decided to write a review I found myself reading it once more. I actually had the feeling that I knew the Author just from his writing.
Having traveled to many foreign countries and visited many bars I find the treatment of the various characters to be very realistic. There’s something about travelers and ex-patriots that is individually unique and something you will keep in your memory for a long time. JR Ingrisano has captured and displayed much of these differences in his characters

A candid, politically incorrect novel about relationships, freedom, loss, and redemption. It even has sharks, sex, and Caribbean breezes. A novel about relationships, freedom, loss and redemption, JR Ingrisano sums up "Captain Jolly's Do Over" in the Forward "We all really have only one story, though details vary We grow up, get married, get bored, get dumped, or just get greedy. Then, after reading one too many Hemingway stories or hearing too many Jimmy Buffett pirate songs, we bail out for the Caribbean drinking margaritas and chasing our fantasies from up north."

Our hero, Jeth (no last name), his marriage of 20 twenty years in the dumps, lawyer letters slowed to a trickle, ditches life stateside heading out for a fresh start--"to forget or to be forgotten"--in the Islands.

Living as an expatriate, Jeth soon becomes "Captain Jolly," picking up that handle by refusing to budge despite intimidating local, Black Mike jamming a knife to his throat. Studying this spunky new guy, Mike concedes “You one jolly dude, Mon.” The name stuck.

Before long, “Jolly” buys "Do Over," a 38-foot, twin-hulled catamaran. Landing a sweet cruise line contract, he's soon sailing "touristas" on half-day snorkeling trips. Jolly responding to how he got to the Islands "I’d just smile, keep it light. They expected a good romance story, with a little mystery mixed in." Tourists loved it!

But the good life doesn’t last. "Hurricane Olive" is heading for the Islands; there won't be much left. Cap’m Jolly "While Hurricane Olive tore at The Do Over and me, I spent the rest of the day and the night playing Superman."

Can "Do Over" escape the storm? Does Cap’n Jolly survive? Will he be redeemed? Ingrisano writes with a captivating style that fits this page-turning narrative.

Bottom Line Into Hemingway? Dig Buffett? You'll like Jolly!
When I saw that Captain Jolly’s Do Over was set in the Caribbean, I knew I wanted to read it. What more can one ask for? Not much, but you get it anyway. Written in the first person, this novel is filled with some robust, yet odd characters who have earned even odder names, some of which not quite so flattering but most fitting.

In true island style, the story begins slowly, and is layered into three distinct timelines the past, the recent past, and the present. At the start, I was a little concerned at the format, but I love the way all three are seamlessly woven together. J.R. Ingrisano pulls off a tightly-knit story that leaves us turning the page for a further chapter or two just to find out what happens. It is meted out in enticing portions.

Captain Jolly’s Do Over is not exactly your average Caribbean getaway, and it is all the better for it. This is a fascinating look at real life and interpersonal relationships. There is a great emphasis placed on human value. It’s a journey of self-discovery, and I think many of us can relate to the memorable characters in the book.

I’m not much of a sailor, but I know enough about boats to appreciate the author’s attention to detail. I was thrilled to read that the seemingly craziest solution was the best possible course of action for Captain Jolly and the ‘Do Over’. This is where the novel begins, but the author doesn’t give much away.

The descriptions are tactile and wonderfully true to life. Clearly, the author has spent enough time on the Islands to get to know the local culture, and has wisely not painted Jamaica as a fantasy, but rather a real ‘paradise’.

There is a subtle yet natural flow from a frivolous note to a serious tone as the story unravels. I like to read characters having an ‘ah-ha’ moment. The novel culminates in a rather emotional and theatrical climax. J.R. Ingrisano tells a magnificent story. We would all love a ‘do over’, and Captain Jolly actually got two!
Awesome book. Hated to put it down. Does make you think about numerous things throughout the story.
Fast read, interesting ... although a good editor might have helped some of his repeat - repeats. Tends to be the universal mid-life marriage crash / dream solution / island escape = but if the guy really lived it good for him. Enjoyed his characters. Most of them.
Good book; there seems to be a sequel coming. That was my main disappointment not all ends wrapped up. A little too much repetition at times of certain phrases or themes, but overall a good read. I'd recommend!
It was simply a fun and interesting tale. I've never been to a tropical island but I could picture what the author described. As I recall there may have been some odd sentences that I needed to read over again-a do over- but overall I enjoyed it.
